Danza Tradicional China USC - Ancestral Voices

ver video

English versión:

This year, our dance team, USC Traditional Chinese Dance, created a "dance drama" based on the story of Mulan using all different styles of dance. This story is about a young girl, Mulan, who takes her father's place in the army by disguising herself as a man (in ancient China, it was forbidden for women to fight in wars). She is ultimately triumphant and becomes a war hero and legend.

The piece that I choreographed to your song is called "Dilemma" because it is about Mulan deciding between staying with her family and friends at home or risking her own life to go to war and save her father, who was once a great general, but it now too old to fight.

When I first heard Ancestral Voices, I was completely drawn to it. I loved how dynamic it was. It made me feel like I had entered a new world that I wanted to explore. To me, it feels very ceremonial and sounds like a modernized version of a sacred song that you would hear at an important ceremony. It also evokes a sense of drama and importance that I really liked and that I thought worked well with the dance I was choreographing.

In choreographing Ancestral Voices, I was searching for a song that could tell a story and I think your piece does this quite well. To me, it has a very clear beginning, middle and end. My choreography is very much about a conflict of interest within a person. I incorporated a lot of contorted movements in order to suggest that. I wanted the audience to feel as if they were experiencing Mulan’s thought process as she decides whether she should or shouldn’t go to war. The other dancers surrounding her represent her thoughts and all the possibilities that could result due to her decision. I feel that the song does a good job of reflecting this since it has so many layers and those layers often take turns flowing to the surface of the song and the melting back into the background of the song”.
